All About the Experience
The hotel experience is truly unlike any other, transporting guests into a carefully curated world specifically designed to stimulate all of our senses. A great hotel experience will include many benchmarking factors including clean rooms, friendly staff members, and great amenities like pools, spas, and gyms. One of the best (and often expensive) luxury hotel brands in the U.S. is the Proper Hotel group by Kelly Wearstler. Although I don’t consider myself a maximalist interior designer, I absolutely revere the work of Kelly because of how bold and eccentric her taste is.
A City like No Other
Kelly Wearstler’s Downtown Proper Hotel is the perfect place for your next stay and design tour. This boutique hotel is located in downtown Los Angeles near other hot spots like Grand Central Market and Union Station. This beautiful space opened in the fall of last year and here you’ll find all of Kelly’s signature design elements – from her masterful layering of textures and patterns as well as vintage furniture pieces sourced from around the world with Spanish, Portuguese and Moroccan aesthetics in mind. A couple of my favorite standout moments are the incredible custom hand-painted tiles and the tropical Seussian potted plants found throughout the property. The intimate rooftop bar looks out at stunning city views and serves as an intimate backdrop for making a toast to this stylish crowning jewel of downtown LA.

Proper Hotels is a hotel chain that is part of the Proper Group. The hotels are located in Los Angeles, New York and London. They are all designed and decorated by Kelly Wearstler and named after the city in which they are located. Each hotel has a unique style that reflects the character and unique local flare of its host city.

When you first step into the lobby of Downtown Proper, it’s hard not to feel like you have stepped onto a movie set. The hotel itself has been designed as a modern art museum—with soaring spaces, bold colors and sculptures by Kelly Wearstler.
There are four dining establishments within the Downtown Proper: The Coffee Bar, which serves breakfast and lunch; The Poolside Café & Bar for poolside dining; Glass House Tavern for craft cocktails and small plates; and Charlie Palmer Steakhouse for fine dining steakhouse fare. The Hotel is a five-story brick building that’s home to an art gallery, restaurant, and boutique hotel. The interior looks like it belongs on the set of a movie about 1930s Hollywood glamour. The space features all kinds of neat design details: The entrance hall has marble floors and columns, as well as large pieces of art hanging from the ceiling. In the restaurant, you can sit at tables made from marble with gold accents—with custom chandeliers and mood lighting throughout. If you want to stay overnight at this downtown Los Angeles gem, you’ll be able to sleep in one of the guest rooms equipped with private bathrooms and luxurious amenities like heated towel racks and custom-made beds.
